A day of Ironies… CAR ACCIDENT!!
It was once said by a friend, ‘no news from me (Jennifer), means its good news’. I laughed it off saying, ‘yar right, how can it be that way. No news would mean I’m dead, vanished.’ My blog fans have been screaming for updates but due to the intense work load and my mad scheduling, I have been unable to put in any new postings. Some would say is good news, some would say is bad news. But to me, an update on my blog is ‘interesting/ out of this world news'.. as usual..
Started off my day like any other day, woke up at 6am, washed up and left at 6.35am, made my way to the bus stop at Katong Convent to catch a lift from a friend to go to the range for practice. (yes, I am mad.. I wake up early to go shooting then to work. Even if it’s only for 1 hr, I am still satisfied.). patiently waited for the car to arrive even though it was late.. again.. haha.. After being a burden to others, I have the check to complain..
At last, the car came; I hopped into it and made myself comfortable. My usual spot in the car is the left back-seat. Decided to take a nap as the trip would be going to be a long one ( I am going to Telok Blangah Heights but before that, she had to drop her husband (H) and son at their workplace first), with the morning traffic and all. Her husband (H) took the wheel this morning. Here’s a simple orientation of our seating, thier son (S) was the front passenger, H, the driver, his wife (W) the right back passenger and me, the left back seat passenger.
And then the incident happened..
My eyes were closed when I heard the 1st honk. Then I heard 2 honks after that. Disturbed, I opened my eyes to see what was happening. A green car was right in-front of us, going real slowly; road hogging; H wanted to cut his lane but was too close to the car in front and hence honked at him to pick up his speed so that there is a bit of a leeway to do the cutting. That road led up to the expressway. Instead of either picking up speed or keeping to one lane, the driver (D) of that car showed the finger. Ok, I didn’t see that finger as I wasn’t in the best of view point to see it. I only heard about it from the wife (W) and the son (S). H managed to cut into the sight lane and over took D. However, in the process of cutting the lane; the two cars would be side-by-side; D winded down the window and put out his right hand pointing the finger!! I saw the whole thing because I was on the left side of the car and that car was to my left.. Boy, was I awake!
The 2nd gesture really provoked H. Immediately, H cut to the front of D’s lane and slowed down his speed, at the same time, winding down his window and gesturing for D to stop his car and ‘talked’ it out. Can you imagine, the whole road to the expressway was snail-ing due to H’s action! The road up to the expressway was only a single lane.. It doesn’t help that it was the rush hour too. The honking of the other car horns was not MUSIC!! D didn’t stop and really, how can you stop on a 1 lane road which is the ONLY road leading up to the highway!!
Once you hit the highway, the 1 lane opened up to several lanes, that’s when the other cars behind sped to cut into the expressway. And like any typical kaypoh Singaporean drivers, they turned their heads to see who the driver of that stalling car was and the people who are in it.. I was trying hard to stay flattened against the window panel, pretending to be some window sticker!!
This is the time when D should have sped off and leave the whole thing behind. I would have since H was so persistent about it. He really wanted that car to stop at the side road of the expressway. When D sped to the 2nd lane, I thought to myself, ‘Thank God, now lets get back to our normal route to work then to training.’ BUT… I was wrong..
D took the 2nd lane and then immediately cut back to our lane (lane 1) and suddenly slowed down his speed.. He actually was ‘threatening’ H to bang his rear!! H managed to jammed his brakes in time!! I was flung forward!! And then back again. H was really pissed off!! PROVOCATION!! Came to my mind!! H over took D and then slowed down his car too in-front of D. I don’t know if D did it on purpose or not but.. ‘BANG’!! D has hit H on the rear, The sudden pick up of speed and stop caused me to be flung back and forth at the back.. with the bang, I was flung forward then back. ‘Aiyah’ was the word/ sound that came out from me.. I had hit my head due to the sudden impact.. I was swung back and forth like a pendulum. My neck was sore.
D must have panicked cause he tried to make a dash for it after the hit. H chased after him and managed to corner his car to the left of the expressway, of course with the help of the slow and heavy traffic, D was unable to cut lane any quicker. When D managed to find some opening to get to the 2nd lane, H actually opened his car door (can u imagine,, the door is on the right of the road where cars are moving fast on an EXPRESSWAY!! He could have been hit!), swiped out his N70 phone and took a picture of D’s car!!
In most cases, normally, at such cases, people would have gotten down the cars and settle the matter. In such extreme cases, already someone is out and has taken your picture, you would just stop the car and negotiate at least it’s the case here in Singapore. BUT no.. ( I seem to be making all the wrong assumptions this morning).. D still drove his car towards H, almost running him over. W had a shocked and she too, opened her door, which is the right side and tried to stop the car. (what was wrong with these people??!!) D also tried to run her down with his vehicle moving towards her direction. H instantaneously used his body as a shield to block the car’s advancement towards his wife. H punched the bonnet of D’s car with his bare fist, causing 2 dents on it. The whole time, H had his phone on his left hand, filming the whole thing.
D was out of options. He pulled over and came out of his car. W was in sudden shocked and she came back into the car. S came out to give his dad some support. And me, I was in ‘gong-ness’ rubbing the side of my head. Apparently, D had ‘assaulted’ H on the right side (that was what H had claimed when the police came. I think it was a touch on the right side but when you are mad, the extreme words are used.). I was watching the whole episode of the ‘mime drama’ from the rear window. I was still in blur-ness.
H claimed that this is a case of hit-and-sun as D had hit his car, hurt a person (me) and ran away. I was like huh?? The police and ambulance was called. The EMS recovery truck also came. (This truck is a highway patrol truck that is supposed to help tow away any mal-functioning cars on the expressway). DRAMA!!!!! What was to come was equally dramatic.
The title for this story is about ironies. So where are they.. now, let me list them out.
1) The whole thing was recorded by a camera at a lamp post pointing directly at the cars. The whole issue’ joke about CCTV through out the year due to Gomez is now re-surfacing again.. H told the police. ‘Go check the CCTV if you don’t believe me!’.
2) The accident happened right outside, along the expressway, of ROAD SAFETY PARK. Yup, the place where we are supposed to learn about taking the necessary actions to ensure road safety. A must-go place for the primary school students. I remembered that I was the pedestrian when I was hoping so much to be a cyclist or a driver. Why didn’t they teach us what to do if you are a passenger??!! It was like a stark contrast to what was happening just outside the premises. Hahahaaa
3) I had hit my head.. but against what? Well against the seat belt connector. Yes, the protruding plastic piece where you would pull out the seat belt from and then buckle up. By now you can tell, I was not buckled!! And of all things that I have to hit myself against was that dumb thing!! What a reminder that I was not seat-belted!! Man!!
4) Just the day before (monday), while chatting on MSN with a friend of mine, I was boasting that I was a safe driver who has yet to get into any CAr accidents. we were comparing how many times my other close friends have ram their cars against something and the costs for the repairs. Me and my mouth.. I got into one myself.. and I wasnt driving!!
So now everyone was out of the car, except for me and the other passenger in D’s car. The police came and took our particulars. Next, the ambulance came and because I had hit my head and H had complained that the car had hit his legs. H had announced it and created such a scene to police and the ambulance and the patrol officers.
I can’t believe it. I was made to sit on stretcher and was wheel-chaired to the ambulance. ‘DUH’!! I wanted to burst out laughing. But given that situation, how can I??!! I had to control my laughter. This is supposed to be an accident drama not a comedy neither can there be any NGs. H was hauled up the ambulance as well as he said his legs were hurt and need help with movement. I was sitting in an ambulance and sent to the hospital.. How cool is that?!!! Haha.. How many times have I been to the hospitals but always by bus, car or taxi. Now, I have really set the bar. I have sat in an ambulance!! Beat that!! Haha..
The mood was quite tense in the ambulance with the 2 paramedics; H and I were trying to look really serious. I know he wanted to laugh as well. He wanted to create a big fuss as he wanted to charge D. I was just a victim of the whole thing. In an ambulance, there are all sorts of bandages and casts to temporary sustain the wounds incurred. Then, H noticed that the neck braces where labeled quite uniquely. There was the brace for ‘short’ neck, ‘tall’, ‘kids’ neck then the really funny one, ‘no-neck’. Erm.. why a neck-brace for a no-neck then?? I could no longer hold onto my laughter. That really cracked me up. The whole bunch of us started laughing even the paramedics. I guess they too found the whole thing (accident), funny but didn’t dare to show it. (another irony.. serious, stoic to uncontrollable laughter, maybe its a way to relief all that stress.)
All these happened early Tuesday morning.. I just want a normal day!! Though, my other days maybe already deemed abnormal by many. But this takes the cake. I was like in a scene of Jackie Chan's block-buster movie with all the car chasing and stuff. if only they gave in. Both drivers, H and D must have had a bad start or in a bad mood. Well, sadly for D, he messed with the wrong guy, H, and found trouble.
Stay tuned for the story at the hospital and the aftermath.. After this long essay.. Readers would be tired and hey, I hurt my head, give me a break.. :p
